This position requires a candidate with a strong background in both engineering and computer programming. With guidance from senior staff, assist in the engineering and software development and enhancement of renewable energy system models for the System Advisor Model (SAM) ( http://sam.nrel.gov ) and PVWatts ( http://pvwatts.nrel.gov ). Duties will include programming software enhancements to SAM in C++, understanding and improving engineering models for renewable energy system performance, data analysis and validation of existing model outputs, publishing technical documentation of modeling processes and techniques, performing basic research to support performance model improvements in a variety of technology areas (PV, wind, CSP, geothermal, and others), as well as supporting economic and technical analyses of system performance using SAM and other available tools. Candidate will work closely with the development team, as well as internal and external stakeholders, and must have excellent communication skills.
Required Education, Experience, and Skills
Relevant Master’s Degree . Or, relevant Bachelor’s Degree and 2 or more years of experience . General knowledge and application of engineering technical standards, principles, theories, concepts and techniques. Training in team, task or project leadership responsibilities. Intermediate abilities and knowledge of practices and techniques. Beginning experience in project management. Good writing, interpersonal and communication skills.
Strong mechanical or electrical engineering background with demonstrated ability to apply fundamental engineering concepts and techniques, particularly to energy system problems.
Demonstrated computer programming proficiency in C++.
Prior experience with renewable energy technologies, systems, and related concepts.
Demonstrated facility for excellent technical writing and communication skills.
Experience developing complex graphical user interface (GUI) desktop software in C++.
Ability to follow detailed requirements and produce quality work in a timely fashion.
Must be able to work 40 hours per week in our Golden, Colorado office.
