SunPower Corp. (www.sunpowercorp.com) designs, manufactures and deploys the world’s highest efficiency solar panels, and is a top-three global provider of large-scale solar power systems, with over a thousand megawatts contracted or in construction.
SunPower’s R&D Performance Group is responsible for characterizations and projections of installed system performance. The group creates and maintains specialized computer simulation software to model the energy output of SunPower products and systems, analyzes the long-term energy performance of a large fleet of grid-connected PV plants, and performs targeted field and lab tests to characterize the performance of both new and existing technologies.
This performance engineering intern’s focus will be on model and software tool development. Some travel and field work may be required.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Refactor existing MATLAB models to Python
Create tests to ensure expected behavior
Investigate 3rd party solutions that could be appropriate to integrate
Perform code reviews
Use GitHub for version control and issue tracking
Communicate key results of work in a timely and effective manner to all stakeholders through memos, reports and presentations
Work closely with other engineers, and work on cross-functional teams with a strong drive for results
Innovate, and solve challenging technical problems with a positive, solution-oriented approach
Field work requires ability to perform light construction
Education, Experience, and Qualifications
Upper division or graduate college student in Engineering or related field
Strong communications skills, both verbal and written, and a proven ability to work with internal and external customers
Strong project management/organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks from multiple requestors
Experience with Python and MATLAB required
Experience with GitHub a plus
Power industry experience, particularly solar industry, preferred
Strong programming ability, software development experience a plus
Experience with object-oriented programming and database theory
Experience with experimental design, testing and analysis
Strong understanding of basic electrical wiring and data acquisition and communication
Background in statistics is highly desirable
Some background in climate or atmospheric science a plus
Creative, self-motivated and self-directed, and able to multi-task a large variety of projects in a fast-paced environment

Intern Program Overview
10-12 week summer program
Interns will individually work under the direction of their managers.
All interns will complete the program by the last day of August 2018. At the completion of the program, the intern will be evaluated and considered for possible future full-time employment upon graduation.
Hourly-based, paid internship, approximately 40 hours per week.
