Job Description

The Advanced Power Electronics and Electric Machines Group within the Center for Integrated Mobility Sciences (CIMS) in Golden, CO, has an opening for a graduate summer student intern. The position is full-time (40 hours per week). The student will assist with both experimental and analytical research on power electronics module development and new circuit topologies for converters.

Applicant must be a full time M.S./Ph.D. student at a US accredited institution. Background in power electronics is required. Experience with laboratory work and conducting experiments is necessary. Experience with simulation tools such as PSIM, LTSpice, and MATLAB is necessary. The intern must have the ability to conduct laboratory experiments, acquire, process, and analyze data, and summarize findings in the form of papers or reports. The position will also require strong communication skills including interpersonal, presentations, and writing. Ability to work both independently and with a team is needed.

The primary job duties will involve building and performing laboratory research experiments to build power semiconductor modules and converters. This task involves a clear understanding of major power converter circuit topologies, gate driver circuits, and controller architectures. Applicants should be familiar with experimental procedures and equipment such as data acquisition systems, vector network analyzers, temperature sensors, reflow station, and power supplies. Applicants will also need to contribute to written publications and oral presentations.

This internship can accommodate a three-month internship at any point in summer and/or fall 2024. An extension beyond three months is possible depending on performance.

Basic Qualifications

Minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.

Undergraduate: Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a bachelor’s degree program from an accredited institution.

Post Undergraduate: Earned a bachelor’s degree within the past 12 months. Eligible for an internship period of up to one year.

Graduate: Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a master’s degree program from an accredited institution.

Post Graduate: Earned a master’s degree within the past 12 months. Eligible for an internship period of up to one year.

Graduate + PhD: Completed master’s degree and enrolled as PhD student from an accredited institution.

Additional Required Qualifications

The applicant must be a current full time M.S./Ph.D. student at a U.S. accredited institution. In addition, the applicant must meet these qualifications:

Background in power electronics.
Experience with laboratory work and conducting experiments.
Reasonable understanding of power semiconductor module packaging and characterization.
Experience with simulation tools such as PSIM, LTSpice, and MATLAB.
Experience in circuit prototyping and designing PCBs.

The intern must have the ability to conduct laboratory experiments, acquire, process, and analyze data, and summarize findings in the form of papers or reports. The position will also require strong communication skills including interpersonal, presentations, and writing. Ability to work both independently and with a team is needed.

Preferred Qualifications

Background in thermal and electromagnetic modeling of semiconductor device and module is a plus. Experience using computer-aided-design and multi-physics finite element analysis tools is a strong plus.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)

Job Profile: / Annual Salary Range: $42,700 – $68,300
