Job Description

The candidate will be part of the Grid Technologies and Systems group within the Power Systems Engineering Center (PSEC) at NREL. PSEC supports the science and technology goals of the U.S. Department of Energy and NREL toward a sustainable energy future. The center works with the electricity industry to optimize strategies for effectively interconnecting renewable resources and emerging energy efficiency technologies in the existing electric power system. The center focuses on resolving grid integration barriers and providing improved control and management strategies for increased grid flexibility, consumer empowerment, and transportation electrification.

The graduate intern will join our cutting-edge research team to work in the broader domain of grid stability with high penetration of renewable energy resources. The candidate will work on DOE projects analyzing the impact of renewable integration on the stability and resiliency of the US electric grid. In particular, the graduate intern will work on model reduction of the US electric grid to facilitate detailed stability and resiliency studies.

The candidate should demonstrate theoretical and practical knowledge in power systems modeling, power systems stability, commercial tools such as PSS/E, and proficiency with Python programming.

Basic Qualifications

Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD degree program, or graduated in the past 12 months from an accredited institution. Candidates who have earned a degree may work for a period not to exceed 12 months. Must have a minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.

Additional Required Qualifications

Currently enrolled graduate students in power engineering, or other relevant areas (Ph.D. students would be preferred).
Solid background in power systems dynamics and control.
Experience in modeling, stability, and control of power systems.
Proficient with PSS/E steady-state and dynamics simulations.
Proficient with Python scripting.
Being self-motivated, having good problem-solving capability, and respecting project timelines.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with PSCAD, MATLAB, MATLAB Simulink will be a plus.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)

Job Profile: Graduate II / Annual Salary Range: $42,700 – $68,300
