Purpose:
Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking a senior leader of research and development in the engineering of clean energy systems. The position will be cross-cutting in nature and focus on the alignment of multidisciplinary science and technology strengths at ORNL to address challenging energy security missions of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). You will become part of the Manufacturing Sciences Division in the Energy Science and Technology Directorate which plays a pivotal role in America’s energy transformation into a clean, efficient, flexible, and secure energy future.

Overview:
As DOE’s largest Office of Science laboratory, there are extensive science expertise and capabilities available to apply to DOE clean energy challenges. Science innovations and breakthroughs provide promise for addressing clean energy challenges, but research and development is required to advance and improve the innovations as they progress in technology readiness. ORNL is seeking a senior research leader in the area of engineering of clean energy systems to translate breakthrough science to real-world solutions. If selected, you will leverage the extensive science and technology resources at ORNL to create, scale up, and demonstrate clean energy solutions.

You will need to have experience in one or more of the following technical areas of interest in clean energy: (1) decarbonization of chemical manufacturing, (2) carbon capture and utilization, (3) decarbonization and/or electrification of process heating for manufacturing, (4) utilization of renewable feedstocks for manufacturing, (5) low energy desalination and wastewater treatment, and (6) techno-economic and life-cycle analyses of industrial processes. You will understand scientific phenomena and technical details to align ORNL strengths with research program initiatives. In addition, you will bring diverse scientific and technical staff together with industry partners and DOE personnel to ensure effective utilization of resources for impactful advancement of the technology readiness of clean energy solutions. Furthermore, you will manage the program and activities in the national laboratory framework. The position will be crosscutting in nature as diverse staff and a broad range of technologies are needed to meet clean energy challenges.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:
Develop research and development strategies to address clean energy challenges
Perform scientific research or science-based analyses including publication in peer-reviewed journals
Develop collaborative relationships with key stakeholders at DOE as well as associated industry, national laboratory, and university partners
Represent ORNL externally in working groups, consortia, and leadership committees
Engage ORNL staff, program managers, and line management in clean energy programs
Secure resources for executing DOE projects and programs in support of DOE missions and goals
Work with ORNL staff and line management to deliver impactful science-based outcomes in support of DOE objectives
Deliver ORNL’s mission by aligning behaviors, priorities, and interactions with our core values of Impact, Integrity, Teamwork, Safety, and Service. Promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility by fostering a respectful workplace – in how we treat one another, work together, and measure success.

Basic Qualifications:
Requires a Ph.D. with a minimum of two years of relevant experience in science and technology research, development, deployment, or demonstration, or a M.S. with a minimum of seven years of relevant experience
Demonstrated experience building and executing high impact research programs
Demonstrated ability to bring diverse people together to advance clean energy technologies
