About the Role

The duties of the position include managing a broad range of indirect tax, regulatory compliance, and government reporting activities within a lean finance organization. This role, under the guidance of the Senior Accountant, oversees sales and use tax, property tax, business licenses, unclaimed property, Census Bureau reporting, tax audits, and other state, local, and federal compliance requirements. The position partners closely with accounting, operations, legal, and external advisors to ensure timely and accurate compliance with regulatory obligations while supporting the company’s overall finance and accounting functions. This position reports into a Senior Accountant.

Responsibilities

Indirect Tax Compliance
Prepare, review, and file sales and use tax returns across multiple jurisdictions.
Monitor nexus requirements and maintain tax registrations.
Review taxability of transactions and ensure proper application of sales and use tax.
Research and resolve indirect tax issues related to purchases, sales, and exemptions.
Maintain exemption certificates and supporting documentation.

Property Tax and Business Licenses
Prepare and file personal property tax returns.
Coordinate annual business license renewals and registrations.
Maintain compliance with state and local regulatory filing requirements.
Monitor filing deadlines and ensure timely submissions.

Process Improvement and Internal Controls
Identify opportunities to improve tax compliance processes and controls.
Assist with implementation and maintenance of tax technology solutions.
Develop and maintain tax procedures and documentation.
Support special projects, acquisitions, and business initiatives from a tax perspective.

Tax Accounting and Reporting
Prepare tax-related account reconciliations.
Analyze tax accounts and investigate variances.
Support monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes.
Maintain tax schedules and supporting workpapers.

Compliance, Regulatory, and Government Reporting
Prepare and file various federal, state, and local regulatory reports to ensure compliance with government reporting requirements.
Coordinate and manage annual Census Bureau surveys and reporting requirements, including economic census, annual business surveys, and other statistical reporting obligations.
Prepare and file unclaimed property (escheatment) reports in multiple jurisdictions, including identifying reportable items, performing due diligence notifications, and maintaining supporting documentation.
Prepare 1099 schedule annually.
Monitor compliance with state and local reporting requirements and maintain a filing calendar to ensure timely submissions.
Assist with government inquiries, notices, examinations, and information requests.
Maintain registrations and accounts with various government agencies and regulatory authorities.
Collaborate with internal departments to gather, validate, and reconcile data required for regulatory filings.
Support internal and external audits by providing documentation and responding to requests related to regulatory filings and compliance matters.

Cross-Functional Support
Partner with other departments to ensure tax compliance.
Provide guidance on indirect tax implications of business transactions.
Assist with training and education related to tax requirements.
Support quarterly and annually internal and external audit.
Provide reports and analysis to support company initiatives when requested.
Conduct ad hoc projects based on Sales, Legal, Operation, HR and other department’s need.
Perform all other duties as required.

Qualifications

Education
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Taxation, or related field required.
CPA certification or progress toward CPA preferred.

Experience
2–5 years of tax or accounting experience, preferably with exposure to indirect taxes.
Experience in a corporate tax department, public accounting firm, or a combination of both.
Multi-state sales and use tax experience preferred.

Required Skills
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Knowledge of accounting principles and financial reporting processes.
Excellent attention to detail and organizational abilities.
Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
Advanced Excel skills and proficiency with ERP systems, especially with SAP.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Skills

Experience supporting tax audits and regulatory examinations.
Read and speak Chinese.
