Position Summary:

The position assumes the responsibilities of an electrical engineer performing design of LV, HV, EHV electrical power systems with emphasis on design of electrical power substations of transmission and distribution systems. The Associate Engineer will be responsible for collaborating with a team of engineers and drafters to support substation engineering design projects, including detailed electrical and physical design for substation projects and providing engineering design and construction support for assigned projects.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities of the Position:

Practical knowledge and understanding of Engineering/Procurement/Construction types of projects.
Coordinating project flow and issues between all engineering discipline and project management.
Providing engineering support to project management, procurement and construction on all stages of projects.
Collaborate with multi-disciplines engineering team to efficiently execute engineering and design of substation/transmission projects.
Developing single-line switching and protection diagrams.
Creating equipment specifications and supporting procurement of equipment including working with vendors and review of the vendor/contractor-proposed equipment.
Developing three-line and DC schematic diagrams.
Developing and maintaining a bill of material.
Developing cable and conduit schedule, including sizing
Conducting the required calculations and creating reports: AC and DC systems including sizing DC battery, overvoltage protection and coordination, conduit fill, grounding, lightning protection, etc.
Developing control panel layouts and wiring diagrams; Selecting protective devices and ratings.
Review and coordination of substation physical drawings and calculations including general arrangements, clearances, details, conduit, grounding, lightning protection, etc.
Design of underground MV and HV cabling systems including cable ampacity, installation details, etc.
Coordinate design with clients, vendors and subcontractors, including attendance at meetings.
Assure that all engineering documents and records are properly maintained.
Coordinate with purchasing and quality control personnel.
Coordination/guidance of designers/drafters and detailed review/approval of electrical drawings.
Understanding unique requirements and constraints of multiple types of projects, including engineering-only, EPC, utility, renewable, industrial, commercial, etc.
Participate in development of less experienced engineers and designers

Professional Registration:

Engineer in Training Certification preferable, but not required.

Educational Requirements:

Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering and/or Electrical Power Engineering.
Educational courses in power systems analysis, electrical machinery, etc.
Knowledge of NEC, ANSI, NEMA, IEEE and other applicable codes and standards.

Experience & Training Requirements:

2+ Years’ Experience in Design of Transmission Level Substations (13.8kV – 500 kV) including:
Transmission Line Protection
Substation Protection and Control Systems
Generator, Transformer and Bus Protection Schemes
Development of station/substation single-line, protection, control and SCADA diagrams including utility and ISO interconnection and operational requirements
Equipment specifications, designs and layouts including major equipment and protection, control, SCADA, and low-voltage auxiliary systems
Capacitor Banks and Distribution Feeder Protection
Demonstrated experience at all interfaces of transmission level projects
Experience with SEL, GE, etc. relays.
Codes and Standards: NEC, NFPA, NESC, OSHA, NERC, RUS, IEEE, ANSI, IEC, Local and Federal Building Codes
Familiarity with, and review of, substation physical drawings and calculations including general arrangements, clearances, details, conduit, grounding, lightning protection, etc.
Highly motivated and able to execute tasks provided adequate supervision.
Good written and verbal communications skills.
Ability to work well with others in a team setting.
Skilled in engineering theories and principles.
Skilled in practice of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations and preparing and presenting recommendations.
Skilled in problem solving in time-sensitive situations

Computer Skills:

Demonstrated experience in the following software programs:
Microsoft Word – Intermediate
Microsoft Excel – Intermediate
AutoCAD (2015 or later) – Intermediate
Microsoft Outlook – Intermediate

Travel Requirements:

Associate Engineers’ travel level is typically 10%.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to lift / move equipment up to 15 lbs.
